Since 1987, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy has been the premiere journal dedicated to the dissemination of original scholarship regarding teaching and learning music theory. The journal publishes open access annually and welcomes submissions for its Articles, Resources, and Notes from the Field sections.
Articles may be on any aspect of teaching or learning music theory, whether the topic addresses core music theory and aural skills classes, a more specialized topic, or a general topic such as curricular revision.
The Resources section of JMTP focuses on core music theory topics (from fundamentals through advanced concepts) in college/university and high school settings. This includes materials that address topics likely to be taught by junior faculty, non-theory specialists (e.g., performer/teachers), and graduate assistants. Examples of materials include course documents, assessment tests and quizzes, assignments and worksheets, lesson plans, teaching videos/demonstrations, and related pedagogical tools and resources.
Additionally, JMTP publishes book reviews and conference proceedings and reports.
The Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy is a project of the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Center for Music Theory Pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma. The Center was established in 1985 to provide an international clearinghouse for information concerning the teaching and learning of music theory and began publishing the journal with the first volume in 1987.
In 2010, a collaborative effort was mounted, approval secured, and funding provided by the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Center for Music Theory Pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma to develop a website that served as a repository for all things relating to music theory pedagogy.
The journal was published by the Carolyn Wilson Collections at Lipscomb University until 2025. In 2026, it was relaunched as an open access journal published by the University of Oklahoma Libraries, with the support of the Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma.
The Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. All content in JMTP is freely available without charge to the user or their institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the Budapest Open Access Initiative's definition of open access.
Users may subscribe to the journal at no cost by clicking on the “Register” link in the top right-hand corner of the journal. By registering and creating an account, users may opt in to being notified via email when new volumes or announcements are published.
Additionally, there is no cost for authors to submit manuscripts. The Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy does not charge any article processing fees (APCs) for any submissions or publications. Additional information and author guidelines can be found on the Submissions page.
